Today is Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, and with Mother’s Day right around the corner, we thought we’d turn the tables and interview the mother-daughter duo behind Petaloom!
Alina, did you go to Take Your Daughter to Work Day when you were little?
I love the idea of Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day! For kids, it’s so challenging to even conceive of all the career paths that are open to grownups.
When I was growing up, most days involved taking your daughter to work. My parents are both immigrants and entrepreneurs. They started a company when I was young, and they were very much bootstrapped, so it was all hands on deck.
I remember being 11 and going to their office after school, only to be assigned a mound of papers to file. For a few years, my understanding of their job came down to, “there’s a lot of paperwork, organized alphabetically.”
I’m curious to know if now kids think work is “a whole bunch of responding to emails on my phone.” Maybe they wouldn’t be that far off?!
What advice would you give for navigating a working relationship with your mom?
It’s tricky to navigate a new kind of relationship with someone you’ve known all your life. Reassess what you know about that person, try to not put them in any particular box, and be open to curiosity, surprise and wonder. Communication is also key, because it’s definitely not a cakewalk!
Emily, what do you appreciate most about working with Alina?
Hearing my daughter’s voice every day, being part of her life on a daily basis. When your child becomes an adult, they go their own way. So when there was a chance to reconnect and become a part of Alina’s life in such a close, positive way, I took it!
What do you find the most difficult?
I had to let go of, “I am your mother, I know best.” We had to redefine the dynamic. Alina knows much more than I do in some areas, and I had to be open to her opinions and respect her decisions.
How will you be celebrating Mother’s Day?
Emily: We have a Mother’s Day terrarium planting workshop coming up!
Alina: Guess what I’m getting my mom this year!
